245Becroft Aria (preliminary round)open$35
Time limit 7 minutes per aria. Competitors will only sing the FIRST of the two arias listed in the programme in this preliminary round. Competitors must also enter TWO other classes in the competition. A single entry in either Class 263 (Linda Wootten Memorial) or Class 264 (Seamus Casey Memorial) will satisfy this condition. 1st Prize $7000 sponsored by the Becroft Foundation. 2nd Prize $3000 and 3rd Prize $1000 sponsored by Auckland Opera Studio.
246Music Theatre in Costumeopen$15
PLACEGETTERS OF THIS CLASS WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR PACANZ 2025 NYPA NOMINATION FOR 'MUSICAL THEATRE' The 'Master Class' component is not required at the nomination stage. Winner receives the Les Kitney Memorial Trophy and $150, sponsored by Janice Webb QSM. Second Prize $100 sponsored by Janice Webb QSM. Third Prize $50 sponsored by TBC. Performers will present two items. Both singing and acting ability will be judged. This class is open to both individuals and duets. Two contrasting items in costume and character are to be presented. Character portrayal, acting, singing and dancing (if appropriate) for the solo or duet will be judged. Competitors may choose the order of their items as long as the music for the Adjudicator is clearly marked and the Stage Manager has been informed. The second item will be performed by the entrants in the same order as listed in the programme after the Interval. NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS 2025 CRITERIA FOR MUSICAL THEATRE A. Competitors shall be 15 and under 25 years of age as at 1st October 2025 B. Each competitor shall perform in three classes during the preliminary round: 1. Piece 1: Stand alone, independent piece from a fully staged musical and NOT from a TV adaption. Max 7mins in duration 2. Piece 2: Stand alone, independent piece from a fully staged musical and NOT from a TV adaption. Max 7mins in duration 3. Master Class – run by the Adjudicators. No audience observation. C. The two Pieces in B1 and B2 must NOT be from the same Musical and MUST show breadth of repertoire with Piece 2 showing a clear contrast to Piece 1. D. Both Piece 1 AND Piece 2 MUST each include at least one example of scene into song. E. The spoken excerpt of the scene into song, can be taken either from the original published musical theatre work OR devised by the competitor and should develop character and story. F. Both Piece 1 and Piece 2 MUST feature the integration of acting, singing and dance and competitors must perform all three. G. Props are permitted but they must be handheld and not require any assistance. H. A backing track MUST be provided and will include music and silence as required for the full performance. There will be NO cueing from the Stage Manager. The track will be cued at the start of each Piece and will not be touched again. I. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 30 seconds or more. J. There will be a semi-final at which competitors will repeat either B1 or B2 at the discretion of the adjudicator. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the three Preliminary round(s). The number of semi-finalists will be decided in accordance with the NYPA rules. K. For the Final Award Concert, three competitors will be recalled and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final. L. Costumes, choreography & music should be appropriate to the age of the competitors and suitable for a family audience – this will be at the Adjudicators’ discretion. M. This competition is for amateur performers only and is not open to professionals*. NB: Males can sing female roles and vice-versa. No distinction between genders. Nomination of competitors by Societies should be based on classes B1-B2 i.e. with or without the Master Class Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to 2 competitors, selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A-D above. The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include; A demonstration of adequate preparation and an authority of performance A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group. If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO nomination will be made.

Open to singers who have not won a first prize during the last three years at this or any similar competition. First place $75 sponsored by Opera Factory.
250Song by a New Zealand Composeropen$15
Prizes in the form of vouchers from SOUNZ. 1st $70, 2nd $40, 3rd $30.
255Vocal Championshipopen$20
Competitors entering this class ($20) must also enter and compete in Classes 257, 258, and 259. Winner receives $200, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $50.
256Folk/Traditional/Spiritualopen$15
The Winner will receive $100. 2nd Prize $50. 3rd Prize $25. Sponsored by the North Shore Performing Arts Society.
257Oratorioopen$15
Time limit 7 minutes. Any preceding recitative must be included. The Winner will receive the Sir John Allum Challenge Cup. The Winner will receive $100. 2nd Prize $50. 3rd Prize $25. Sponsored by the North Shore Performing Arts Society.
258Art Song in original English (any period)open$15
The Winner will receive $100. 2nd Prize $50. 3rd Prize $25.
259European Art Song and Liederopen$15
A combination of Class 254 European Art Song (not English) after 1840 (open), and Class 259 German Lied. Winner will receive the Gwilym Evans Memorial Trophy and $125, Second place $50, and Third place $25.
263The Linda Wootten Memorial Awardopen$25
Open to female singers. Winner receives $750, Second place $250, Third place $100 from the Linda Wootten Estate. Competitors will sing three items: an aria from opera, a German Lied, and an item in English. These may be sung in any order, but total performance time must not exceed 15 minutes. Due to time constraints, singers are requested to NOT give spoken introductions to their works.
264The Seamus Casey Memorial Awardopen$25
Open to male singers. Winner receives $750 sponsored by anonymous donor, 2nd place $250 and 3rd place $100, sponsored by NSPAS. Competitors will sing three items: an aria from opera, a German Lied, and an item in English. These may be sung in any order, but total performance time must not exceed 15 minutes. Due to time constraints, singers are requested to NOT give spoken introductions to their works.
